How to fit it

  1. Stand the ladder against the gutter, leaving enough room between the rungs to fit the LockJaw.

  2. Use the adjustment knob to raise the bar almost all the way up.

  3. Before climbing, open the handle with two hands: push the safety lock forward with your thumb while pulling the trigger. Then clip the LockJaw to your belt with the carabiner.

  4. At the top, place the jaws over the gutter with the bar over the ladder rail. The LockJaw should sit firmly against the rail.

  5. Make sure the jaw fits snugly under the lip of the gutter. This stops it from twisting.

  6. Push the handle down with the palm of your hand until you hear a clear click. Pull lightly on the handle, without pressing the trigger, to check that it is locked.

  7. Wind the bar down firmly onto the ladder rail with the adjustment knob, then use the spring-loaded tabs to slide it tight against the side of the rail.

Questions about the LockJaw

Does the LockJaw work on a plastic gutter?

No. The jaws have to grip under the lip of the gutter, and according to the manufacturer the LockJaw is therefore not intended for plastic gutters. It works on most metal gutters with such a lip.

Does the LockJaw fit a telescopic ladder?

Some, but not all. According to the manufacturer, on some telescopic ladders the clamp bar does not wind down far enough to lock the ladder. The LockJaw fits ladder rails up to about 50 mm wide.

Can the gutter take the weight of the ladder?

That is for you to judge. The manufacturer only recommends the LockJaw if you would rest the ladder on the gutter anyway. If you are unsure whether the gutter is strong enough, do not use it.

Do I need one or two LockJaws?

One is enough: the LockJaw is designed to work on its own. According to the manufacturer, people who climb often or work on taller buildings often choose two, one on each side of the ladder. That gives more stability.

How do I take it up the ladder?

On the supplied carabiner, clipped to your belt or belt loop. That way you keep three points of contact with the ladder while climbing.

Will it damage the gutter?

The jaws have rubber pads to prevent scratches. Because the ladder is held tight against the gutter, it also rubs less. The manufacturer also mentions a gutter protector as an extra option.

Does it fit a gutter with a leaf guard?

Only if you can lift the leaf guard, as with some plastic ones. A fixed metal leaf guard will not work, because the LockJaw has to clamp onto the inside of the gutter.

How quickly is it secured?

According to the manufacturer in about five seconds, and it comes off just as quickly. You open the handle with two hands before climbing; at the top you lock it with one hand.

Where does the LockJaw come from?

From Australia. Craig Charlton and his father Robert came up with it in 2009, after an accident while working on a ladder.

Does the LockJaw carry a CE mark?

No. According to the manufacturer, the LockJaw is not covered by any EU legislation that requires CE marking, and there is no harmonised EN standard for ladder accessories of this type. It complies with the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988, and the manufacturer holds an EU declaration of conformity under that regulation. The manufacturer itself refers to the American standard ANSI A14.8 for ladder accessories.

What if it does not fit my ladder or gutter?

As a consumer you have a 14-day cooling-off period. Our withdrawal and returns page explains how it works.
